Some games allow the player to switch between a third-person and a first-person view. This mechanic allows players to choose which play style they prefer, and even switch actively between the two depending on the situation, creating a custom style of play and allowing for maximum comfort to every eventuality.

Examples:

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Edit

Morrowind screen002

Morrowind is the first game I ever played with this mechanic. Either perspective is perfectly fine for the entire game but switching between the two can be used for more easily completing certain tasks. In particular, when in third-person and looking at a large clump of loot, finding those items that the player wants to collect can be difficult, but switching briefly to first-person makes it very easy to pick up the desired items while leaving any useless trash that might be mixed in with the valuables.
