The real time strategy genre commonly demands the player to control multiple units at once. This action can be a very difficult and tedious task if the player has to select every unit by hand. Due to this inconvenience many real time strategy games have adopted the design of a dragging box that selects every unit inside of that box. This allows the player to quickly grab the units they desire in the area they want quickly and without hassle.

Examples[]

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos[]

In Warcraft III the player can select up to twelve units at once. The easiest way of selecting these units when they are needed is by left clicking and dragging a green box around them and then letting go when desired. The green box will prioritize soldiers first and then workers until it either runs out of units or has successfully selected twelve.

The units in Myth 2 can be grouped together and controlled easily. The entire game revolves around delicate troop movements and the ability to select them is key. There was no resource management or buildings to take care off. It was all these troop movements that the game made easy to use through selecting multiple troops.
