Most competitive online games have different ways of handling their player bracket systems. In some cases, companies make it extremely difficult to move up from the lower brackets, where 90% of the player base is at. Even if the player is winning games, they still are stuck in "matchmaking hell" for months. This frustrates players to the point where they will just quit the game and move on to something else. By creating a system that better encourages progression through the ranks, this will mitigate these player losses.

Example: Starcraft 2

An extremely high percentage of players in Starcraft 2 are either in Bronze or Silver division. There is a very arbitrary system that decides when the player can rank up, with no real visible signs of improvement. This creates a bottleneck in the Bronze/ Silver division, which makes it extremely difficult to move out of.
